Phonics

West Monkton CEVC Primary School

Phonics at Landscove

At Landscove we use Bug Club Phonics, a comprehensive teaching programme and DFE approved systematic synthetic phonics scheme.

During daily phonics lessons, children are taught the most common phoneme/grapheme correspondence first, along with their accompanying action, enabling them to quickly begin to blend and segment words, first orally and then applying this new knowledge in reading and spelling.  Alongside this, in each phase the children are taught the recommended non-decodable ‘tricky words’.

Children read phonetically decodable books which correspond to the learning taking place in class and the needs of the individual child. We follow the sequentially progressive order of the Bug Club scheme to help the children develop confidence, fluency and that all important love of reading at this early stage.

Through our class meetings, early reading meetings and regular communications, we share with parents how we teach phonics and how they can support their children at home on the exciting journey of learning to read and write.

Assessment

We follow the Phonics Bug schedule of assessment alongside our ongoing teacher observations and AFL(assessment for learning) to ensure the children have a secure understanding and are applying their skills across the setting and curriculum. This enables us to quickly provide consolidation or additional support where needed.

Moving on

When ready, children in KS1 will move onto the Accelerated Reader scheme.
